Matthew Levin MD
Dr. Levin is a practicing board-certified Cardiac Anesthesiologist, Associate Vice Chair of Research and Director of Research Informatics for the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative & Pain Medicine, and Director of the Clinical Data Science Team for the Mount Sinai Health System. Dr. Levin also sits on the Mount Sinai Health System Data Use Committee, where he helps ensure the protection of patient data.
Innovating Under Pressure
Dr. Levin has substantial experience with medical device development. During the COVID-19 crisis Dr. Levin led a multi-disciplinary group to drive innovation in ventilators by working with both the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and industry partners.
Ventilator Innovation
Working with Stryker, Dr. Levin developed a novel flow control valve that allowed one ventilator to be used to ventilate two patients. The team went from first prototype to FDA Emergency Use Authorization in six weeks.
Ventilator Validation by FDA for Emergency Use
Dr. Levin also worked with the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) to clinically validate JPL’s design of the VITAL Ventilator, a low-cost high pressure ventilator designed to be rapidly produced using domestically sourced parts.
